Standing up for equity and rights for all

Who is Eddie Dungan
Mr. Dungan, a 36-year-old individual, tragically passed away under the supervision of Two Rivers Correctional Institution Officers and medical staff on January 8th, 2023. Despite directives for his transfer to a hospital, COs neglected to act accordingly. Subsequently, Mr. Dungan was kept in a dry cell for 79 hours, surpassing Oregon DOC's policy limit of 73 hours. Such treatment is unacceptable and necessitates accountability for those responsible.

Following Mr. Dungan’s passing, his sister Christy has been actively engaged in seeking information from ODOC regarding the circumstances surrounding her brother's death. She has organized protests at DOC headquarters, Oregon State Penitentiary, and in Eugene, along with participating in the 4th of July parade in Creswell. Additionally, she has utilized billboards to raise awareness during these protests and has facilitated discussions with individuals impacted by the justice system. This year, we are once again participating in the 4th of July parade.

Mr. Dungan's legacy includes a cherished family and beloved children. Our primary request from ODOC is transparency regarding activities behind prison walls, allowing the public to understand the state of affairs within the prison system. Individuals under their care should not have to struggle for proper medical attention; any health concerns should be promptly addressed by medical professionals.

Eddie Dungan's passing at Two Rivers Correctional Institution (TRCI) has raised serious questions about the conditions within Oregon’s prison system. His story highlights the growing concerns around deaths of adults in custody, medical neglect in prisons, and the lack of accountability in correctional facilities. Families and advocates are demanding answers and pushing for prison reform in response to this suspicious death behind bars. As more cases emerge involving AIC mistreatment and systemic neglect, the call for transparency and justice becomes even more urgent. Eddie’s experience sheds light on the institutional failures that contribute to wrongful deaths in custody and the ongoing crisis in prison healthcare.

Every death behind bars is a call for change. This is a fight for justice for all AICs who have lost their lives in custody, and for the families who are left to mourn without answers. We will not stay silent until those responsible are held accountable. We are demanding transparency, justice, and reform for every AIC who has passed under questionable circumstances.

Steven

I am the Oregon Representative for Justice for Eddie Dungan. I am also an ex-Oregon Adult in Custody. Steven
Justice for Eddie Dungan Oregon Representative

Being part of the Justice for Eddie Dungan group has been an incredibly meaningful experience. This organization hosts multiple events throughout the year, creating opportunities to raise awareness and educate the public about ongoing issues within the Oregon Department of Corrections. The group plays a vital role in shedding light on the alarming number of deaths occurring within state facilities and exposing the harsh realities many adults in custody (AICs) face. Incarceration should never equate to a life-or-death sentence. AICs retain their constitutional rights, including those protected under the Eighth Amendment, which guarantees access to adequate medical care. Unfortunately, obtaining even basic treatment remains an uphill battle for many. If you are challenging the system and seeking support, I strongly encourage you to connect with this group. Their collective voice is powerful—and growing stronger with every person who joins the cause.
